Michael P. Rodgers 1959-2012 SPRINGFIELD-Michael P. Rodgers, 53, died peacefully on Sunday December 16, 2012 after a brief illness. Mike was surrounded by family and friends at BSMC when he passed. Mike is survived by his loving wife of 24 years, Dawn (Williams) Rodgers and their two children Kaleigh and Michael, who Michael loved with all his heart. He leaves his sister Bonnie Kronenberg and brother-in-law Dennis of Winchester, MA and their children Alice, John and David, sister-in-law Beth Drummond and her husband John of Springfield and their children Meredith, Holly, Emily and Jimmy and his best friend Bobby Robare of West Springfield. Michael also leaves behind his “honorary” children Claire and Liam Murphy and his loyal companion “Elliot” the Irish Water Spaniel. Mike was predeceased by his parents John (Big John) Rodgers, an Irish immigrant from County Clare and Alice (Shea) Rodgers who was raised in the Ward Section of Springfield. Mike was a lifelong Springfield resident and grew up in the Hungry Hill Section of Springfield. He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church. Mike was a graduate of Sacred Heart Elementary School, Cathedral High School and AIC. He was employed for over 30 years by the Telephone Company and retired as an Account Executive. Mike was extremely active in his community and served as an elected member of the Springfield School Committee, past Chairman of the Liquor License Commission and served on the Springfield School Building Commission. Mike was a respected member of many local organizations including the John Boyle O’Reilly Club, The Holyoke Saint Patrick’s Day Parade Committee, The Springfield Boys and Girls Club, the Dante Club in West Springfield and the Eagles Club of Springfield. Mike was very proud of his Irish heritage and participated in many local Irish organizations and events. Mike, along with his lifelong friend Tim Rooke, were Parade Marshalls of the Millennium Saint Patrick’s Day Parade in Tralee, County Kerry, Ireland. Mike was committed to area youth having served as a mentor in the Springfield Public Schools and as a long term coach in the Holy Cross Parish. Mike was a Democratic activist for many years offering advice, guidance, strategic leadership and support to many local and State wide political leaders who sought out his keen political expertise. Throughout his life, Michael touched many lives and was a trusted and loyal friend to all. Friends may meet Thursday at 10 am in Sacred Heart Church for the Funeral Mass. Burial will be private. Calling hours at the West Springfield Curran-Jones Funeral Home will be Wednesday 4-7 pm.
