Alfred "Junie" Fontana
1933 – 2016
Venice, FL – Alfred "Junie" Fontana, 82, formerly of Agawam died Saturday at his home in Venice. Junie was born in West Springfield the son of the late Alfred and Lorenza (Cianchini) Fontana. He grew up in West Springfield, as a rink rat at the old Coliseum with the Deadline Gang, graduated from Agawam High School and lived in Agawam most of his life before moving to Venice over 20 years ago. He was a standout athlete at Agawam High School, playing football for the team that went to and won the Peanut Bowl. He played professional hockey in Milan, Italy and upon his return to the United States, for the Philadelphia Ramblers of the Eastern Hockey League. He was a longtime linesman for the AHL and refereed many college games across the country. He served as a Firefighter for the Town of Agawam and as its Fire Inspector and also belonged to the Auxiliary Police Department. Junie was very active in the Venice Moose Lodge, most recently serving as its Governor. Besides his parents Junie was predeceased by his brother Caesare "Chet" Fontana. He leaves his sister Marcella F. Breton of West Springfield and two nephews Gary G. Breton and Kenneth B. Breton. The funeral will be held at the West Springfield Curran-Jones Funeral Home Monday March 28, 2016 at 9:00am with Liturgy in St. Thomas the Apostle Church at 10:00am followed by burial in Oak Grove Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held SATURDAY MARCH 26, 2016 from 2:00 – 5:00pm.
