WEST SPRINGFIELD - Alice S. (Jacoby) Barnes, 87, of West Springfield died Friday peacefully at home. Alice was born in Long Island, grew up in Wareham, MA and had lived in North Carolina, Georgia and Florida before settling with her family in West Springfield. A retired Home Economics teacher, she last taught at Chicopee Comprehensive High School. She was a 50+ year member of West Springfield United Methodist Church. She was predeceased by her husband, David L. Barnes, Sr. and her daughter, Peggy Barnes Eyer. She leaves her son, David L. Barnes, Jr. and his wife Gail of West Springfield, her son, Dale S. Barnes and his wife, Margaret of Jacksonville, Oregon, 5 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
Alice lived a full life as wife, mother, teacher and friend. In later years she and her husband traveled extensively to participate in David's 1st Special Services Army reunions in US, Canada and Europe. She welcomed European teachers into her home as part of the American Host Program. Her favorite pastimes were tending her many flower and vegetable gardens, reading, sewing and spending time with her family.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 29th, at 11:00 AM, West Springfield United Methodist Church, 800 Amostown Rd., West Springfield, MA, to celebrate Alice's life. There are no visiting hours and the West Springfield Curran-Jones Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. For more details please visit curranjones.com.
