Alice Mae (Daire) Hicks, 101, was called home on the evening of Saturday, January 15th. Alice was born to Frank and Irma Daire in Hudson Falls, New York, where she grew up with seven siblings. She lived most of her adult life in Holyoke, Massachusetts where she raised six children.
Alice's family for many decades has run Eddie's Furniture Company (currently owned by her son Job) in Holyoke next door to the apartment she called home for the majority of her life. She was employed there on a small part-time basis to help with bookkeeping all the way into her centenarian days. Alice also faithfully attended Bible Baptist Church of West Springfield for over four decades, much of which time her sons Job and Peter were pastor and assistant pastor respectively. There, she taught Sunday school, played piano and sang in the choir.
She was predeceased by two husbands, Hobart Winthrop Hosmer and Edward Hicks, Sr.; one daughter, Linda Daviau; three grandchildren, Melissa Daviau, John Charko and Joshua Hicks; and one great grandchild, Caleb Hicks. She is survived by five children, Edward Hicks, Jr. and wife Carol, Job Hicks and wife Martha, Joan Charko and husband Daniel, Peter Hicks and wife Laura, Beverly Sabourin and husband Steven; 18 grandchildren; 35 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; two sisters, Mary Godette and Irma Jean Bishop; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at the West Springfield Curran-Jones Funeral Home on Saturday March 5th at 11:00 a.m. There will be no visiting hours.
