Althea R. Cowles

1911 – 2020

Agawam – Althea (Rivers) Cowles, 108, died peacefully Tuesday afternoon surrounded by her loving family.  Althea was born in Springfield, the oldest of nine children to Levi and Amelia (LaMontagna) Rivers.  She has lived in Agawam her entire life and at the age of 105 was considered the oldest resident of the town.  She worked as an assembler for F.W. Sickles Company until her retirement in 1972.  A communicant of St. John the Evangelist Church, she was active at the Senior Center where she enjoyed painting classes, visiting with her many friends and as a member of the Golden Agers Club, Chapter #1.  She also enjoyed Square Dancing in her younger days.  Her husband Aden Cowles died in 1983.  She leaves two daughters Jacquelyn Fenton, Geraldine Mayou and her husband William; two brothers Robert and Earl Rivers; a sister Dolores Kehoe; daughter-in-law Nancy Cowles; and a loving extended family of fourteen grandchildren; twenty-five great grandchildren and fourteen great great grandchildren.  Sadly, she was predeceased by a son Wallace A. Cowles; siblings Beulah Colli, Charles, Roland and Lawrence Rivers, Adrienne Alvigini and a son-in-law James Fenton.  Visiting hours will be held at the Agawam Curran-Jones Funeral Home Sunday from 2:00 – 5:00pm.  Family and friends are invited to meet at St. John the Evangelist for the Liturgy of Christian Burial Monday at 10:00am followed by burial in Agawam Center Cemetery.  For more details please visit curranjones.com.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Golden Agers, Chapter #1, 954 Main Street, Agawam, MA 01001.
