Ambrogio J. Giannini

1928 – 2019

CHICOPEE – Ambrogio J. "Sonny" Giannini, 90, died Saturday evening at home surrounded by his loving family.  Sonny was born in West Springfield and has lived in Chicopee for the past 15 years.  He was a retired master machinist.  Sonny served with the United States Air Force during World War II.  In 1953, he saved a drowning child, who had capsized his canoe at Watershop Ponds and received the Carnegie Medal of Honor, in recognition for an act of outstanding heroism.  Sonny was a founding member of the Pioneer Valley Radio Control Club.  He leaves his wife of 64 years Barbara (Kostanski) Giannini; four children Maria LaFrance and her partner Scott Stewart; Michael, John and Christa Giannini; three grandchildren Hannah, Gabrielle and Zachary and many nieces and nephews including Renee and Lynda.  He also leaves his canine companion "Zoey".  He was predeceased by a sister Gloria Poulsen and brother Joseph.  The funeral will be held at the West Springfield Curran-Jones Funeral Home Saturday at 8:30am with Liturgy in St. Stanislaus Church at 10:00am.  The burial will be at the convenience of the family.  For more details please visit curranjones.com.  Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association,  P.O.
