Obituary

Ann Marie E. (Zawistowski) Bellico, 67, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, May 8, 2015, after a long and brave battle against ovarian cancer. Ann, daughter of the late Theodore and Sophie (Mastalerz) Zawistowski was born on September 5, 1947 in Springfield and grew up in Enfield, CT. A loving wife and caring mother, she graduated from Our Lady of the Angels Academy in Enfield in 1966 and Willimantic State Teachers College, now Eastern Connecticut State University, in 1970. She married Richard A. Bellico of Enfield on June 6, 1970 at St. Adalbert's Church, also in Enfield, across the street from where she was raised. Ann was a devoted teacher throughout her life, first at Enfield Street Elementary School and then for twenty years at Phelps Elementary School in Agawam, where generations of first graders benefited from her scholastic and life lessons. She was a gifted and accomplished artist, excelling in painting, needlepoint, and quilting. In 2004, Ann won the Best in Show for her Baltimore Album Quilt at the Hardwick Community Fair, the oldest such fair in the country. She loved to bake and collect antiques with her husband Richard and took great pride in her home. As a longtime member of the Agawam Historical Association, she worked tirelessly to preserve local history and was instrumental in the placement of the Anne Sullivan Memorial in Feeding Hills, and the restoration of the Thomas Smith House, also in Feeding Hills. Ann had a passion for traveling throughout New England and would eagerly anticipate trips to Duxbury, MA, Woodstock, VT, and Ogunquit, ME. Ann was a gentle soul, who in her high school yearbook quoted St. John of the Cross, "Where there is no love, put love, and you will find love." She was a loving wife to her husband, Richard A. Bellico, a devoted mother to her son, Matthew J. Bellico of Boston, and a caring sister to her two sisters, Jane Reardon of Granby, CT and Elaine Harkins of Enfield, CT. A Funeral Mass will be Monday at 11am at Sacred Heart Church, 1103 Springfield Street with burial in St. Patrick's King Street Cemetery in Enfield, CT. Calling hours will precede the Mass at the AGAWAM CURRAN-JONES FUNERAL HOME, 745 Cooper Street from 9:30 - 10:30am. In lieu of flowers, Ann's family kindly requests that donations may be made to the Thomas Smith House, c/o the Agawam Historical Association, Box 552, Agawam, MA 01001.
