Anthony L. Martilli

WEST SPRINGFIELD – Anthony L. Martilli a resident of the West Side Community for over 75 years has died. Tony was born in Springfield and grew up in the Goatville section of the city. Tony #16 played offense and defense as a halfback in the late 1930's on the Cathedral High School Football Team that won four city Championships under the direction of Coach Billy Wise, with Heisman Trophy quarterback Angelo Bertelli leading the offense. Anthony served in the United States Navy during World War II and is a current member of the American Legion and Knights of Columbus organizations based in West Springfield. Tony served West Springfield as a member of the Police Department for 27 years retiring at the rank of Captain. Mr. Martilli also served as a Federal Marshall and worked numerous years at the Big E. Tony and his wife Flora were longtime communicants of the former Saint Ann's Catholic Church in West Springfield. He leaves his wife Flora M. (Ferrentino) Martilli; son Dean Martilli West Springfield; daughter Carol Burroughs of Raleigh, North Carolina and five grandchildren. Anthony was predeceased by his grandson Dean Martilli, Jr. in 2002. The funeral will be held at West Springfield Curran-Jones Funeral Home Saturday June 11, 2016 at 9:00am with Liturgy in Sacred Heart Church, Springfield at 10:00am followed by a burial in St. Michael's Cemetery.
