Anthony "Mr. Brown" Pioggia, Jr., 86, entered into eternal rest on Friday, April 28, 2017 at Mary's Meadow in Holyoke. Born in Springfield, he was the son of the late Antonio and Fortuna (Tavina) Pioggia and a lifelong resident, most of his life in the Glenwood section. Anthony was a police officer for the City of Springfield for over forty years, retiring as a Lieutenant in the Youth Aid Bureau. He received an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice from Springfield Technical Community College. Anthony was an avid sportsman and coached baseball for the former Van Horn Parents Athletic Association and was also a manager for their hockey team. He was an army veteran of the Korean Conflict, a member of the American Legion, the Disabled American Veterans and a communicant of Sacred Heart Church. Tony will always be remembered for his generosity and his great sense of humor and endless wit. Anthony's family would like to thank the staff at Mary's Meadow for the kind and compassionate care that was shown to him while he was a resident there. He leaves his wife of fifty-eight years, Margaret S. (Taraska) Pioggia, two sons, Anthony Pioggia, III and his wife Susan Pioggia of Feeding Hills, Thomas P. and his wife Kim Pioggia of East Longmeadow, a sister, Rose Argiro of Agawam, a sister-in-law, Mary Ann Wolfe of South Hadley, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Wednesday at 9am from the WEST SPRINGFIELD CURRAN-JONES FUNERAL HOME, 109 Main Street followed by a Mass at 10 in Sacred Heart Church, Springfield. The burial will follow in the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Calling hours are Tuesday from 4-7pm. Donations may be made to Mary's Meadow, 6 Gamelin Street, Holyoke, MA 01040.
