1934 – 2016

West Springfield – Bernard B. Shaw, 82, passed away Wednesday, November 09, 2016 at Baystate Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. He was the son of the late James and Euphemia (Smith) Shaw. Bernie was a 1951 graduate of Holyoke High School and then earned his Bachelor's Degree from Westfield State College in 1961 and his Master's Degree in 1966. He also graduated from Springfield College with a GAGS in 1974. He was employed in the City of Chicopee as a teacher and administrator for 32 years. He was a Past Master Councilor of the Pioneer Valley Chapter Order of DeMolay, and Past Master of Mt. Tom Lodge of Masons. He was a past president of the West Springfield Lions Club, served on the West Springfield School Committee and was a Town Meeting member. A Korean War Veteran, with the United States Army , he also was a life member of the National Education Association and Massachusetts Teacher Association. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers Robert, James and Douglas. He is survived by his loving wife and devoted caretaker, Geraldine, of 57 years, his devoted daughters Wendy Gage and her husband Michael of West Springfield and Kimberley Shaw and her husband David Brown of Wooster, Ohio; four adoring grandchildren Sarah Gage and her partner Marc Riccio, Brittany Gage and her partner Mike Dublin, and Keagan and Cassidy Brown; and his two grand dogs Ellie and Ruby. A committal service will be held at the Massachusetts Veteran's Memorial Cemetery on Tuesday, November 15, 2016 at 9:00am. The West Springfield Curran-Jones Funeral Home is handling all arrangements. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Shriner's Hospital for Children, 516 Carew Street, Springfield, MA 01104.
