Obituary

WEST SPRINGFIELD - Carmella R. (Marvici) Farella, 100, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, August 4, 2022.  Born in Waterbury, CT, daughter of the late Giuseppi and Agatha (Parisi) Marvici, she was a former resident of West Springfield for almost ninety years.  After the untimely death of her father when she was two years old, her family relocated to West Springfield, where her mother married Dominic Garreffa.  Carmella was educated in the West Springfield Public Schools.  During the Great Depression, she had to leave school to help support the family.  Later in her life, she attended night school to catch up on the grades missed.  During World War II, Carmella worked at the former American Bosch Company as an inspector of magnets for fuel injectors, for planes, destroyers and submarines.  After the war, she met her husband to be, John, and was married on May 21, 1947.  Carmella was a homemaker for many years, during which time, as a hobby, she became a songwriter.  One song was produced and aired on local radio stations.  With the early death of her husband at the age of forty-nine, Carmella then worked as a sales clerk for both the former Forbes & Wallace and Steiger's Department Stores.  After they closed, she worked as a housekeeper at Mercy Hospital in Springfield until she retired in 1988.  Carmella had a love for life and enjoyed cooking, gardening, playing the lottery, spending time at the beach and especially spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and her beloved cat, Gracie.  Her faith was a very important part of her life. Carmella attended Sunday Mass with her close lady friends and then would gather for lunch. She was a communicant of St. Thomas the Apostle Church.  Carmella was a very kind and generous person and will be missed by those who knew her. The Farella family would like to thank the staff and administration at Mount Carmel Care Center for their excellent care both physically and spiritually. She leaves a son and his wife, Michael A. and Diane Farella of Pittsfield, a daughter-in-law, Leslie (Percy) Farella of British Columbia, Canada, her grandchildren, John Farella and his wife Amy, Nannette Farella, Katherine Farella all from British Columbia, Canada, Vanessa (Farella) Baxter and her husband Patrick of Melrose, MA, Joseph Farella and his wife Katherine of Wellesley, MA, Paul Farella and his wife Samantha of Dalton, and Michael Farella, Jr. and his wife Alyssa of Pittsfield, and eleven great-grandchildren.  She was predeceased by her husband, John Farella in 1970 a son, John Farella, Jr. in 2003, her brothers, Frank, Pasquale (Patsy) and John Marvici, a step-brother, David Garreffa and a step-sister, Antonette (Garreffa) Korchynski.  The funeral will be Friday at 11am at St. Thomas the Apostle Church followed by burial in St. Thomas Cemetery. Calling hours will precede the funeral on Friday from 9:30-10:30am at the West Springfield Curran Jones Funeral Home, 109 Main Street.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mount Carmel Care Center, 320 Pittsfield Road, Lenox, MA 01240.
