Obituary

Dr. Cengiz Kayi of South Hadley, passed peacefully from this world Sunday, September 25. Dr. Kayi was born September 28, 1928 in Bor, Turkey to Fayik and Meryem Kayi. He graduated from the University of Ankara Medical School and came to the US in 1954 for his internship at Lawrence General Hospital. He completed a 4-year surgical residency at Springfield (Baystate) Hospital, where he met his wife Carol (Looney) Kayi. He went on to Lawrence and Memorial Hospital in New London, CT. where he completed an additional year of surgical residency. He and his wife returned to Turkey where he worked as a civilian in the surgical department of the American Airforce Hospital in Ankara. Upon returning to the United States in 1962, he worked in hospitals in Ohio and Maryland before settling in Michigan. He became Board Certified in Family Practice and a partner at Farmington Family Physicians in Farmington Hills, MI. Dr. Kayi retired in 1988 and lived in Newbury, NH, and Mt. Pleasant, SC, before moving with his wife to South Hadley. Dr. Kayi is survived by his wife of 58 years, Carol, his son John (Angela) Kayi and his two grandchildren, Oliver and Amelia of Clarkston, MI, daughter Leyla Kayi of South Hadley, and his daughter Lisa and granddaughter Brenna of South Carolina, his sister-in-law Catherine Moran of Loomis House Holyoke, sister-in-Law Joan (Bill) Sears of South Hadley, and brother-in-law Robert Goodhind, of West Springfield. Dr. Kayi is also survived by many nieces and nephews in Turkey, the US and around the world. Dr. Kayi was pre-deceased by his mother, father, three sisters and their husbands, and many of his in-laws. At his request, there will be no services. Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or Make-a-Wish Foundation of Massachusetts and Rhode Island 181 Park Avenue, Suite 12, West Springfield, MA 01089.
