David J.
Powell
June 18, 1937 – February 19, 2021
Dave Powell, 83, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 19, 2021 at the Soldiers' Home in Holyoke after a two year battle with cancer. Born June 18, 1937 in Rutland, Vermont to the late Thomas and Marie (Garant) Powell, Dave lived most of his early life in Connecticut where he joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1955, serving four years in the Philippines and East Asia during the post-Korean conflict. A longtime resident of Agawam, Massachusetts, Dave was employed for many years by Sweet Life Foods and Big Y. In retirement, he earned an Associate in Science degree in Business Administration from STCC in 1993. Dave was known for his love of red cars, especially Cadillacs, and was a huge fan of the Boston Red Sox. He also enjoyed listening to music from the 1950s and 1960s, particularly songs by Elvis Presley. In his later years, Dave volunteered many hours at the Longmeadow Adult Center, often in support of local veterans. A true patriot, Dave was a member of the East Longmeadow American Legion, Post 293, and looked forward to marching in local parades, proudly wearing his uniform. Dave leaves his daughter, Jennifer Palma, her husband Daniel, granddaughter Gabriella of Longmeadow, his twin brother, Thomas Powell, Jr. of Kennebunk, Maine, and his younger brother George Powell of San Diego, California, along with several nieces and nephews. A walk-through visiting hour will be held on June 8th from 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm at Curran Jones Funeral Home, 745 Cooper Street, Agawam and a ceremony will follow at the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Agawam at 2 pm. Donations may be made in Dave's memory to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, P.O. Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284. For additional information, please visit www.curranjones.com.
