Obituary

Donald Learned, 67, passed away at home on Saturday December 26 th after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born 7 minutes after his twin brother on October 20, 1953 in Ludlow, the son of the late Helen (Slicer) and Benjamin Learned.  Donald worked as a Maintenance Mechanic for Springfield Wire from 1979 until it closed in 2007.  He made many friends during his years at the wire and fondly reminisced about his time there, the friendships made and the crazy antics that he helped instigate.  His quick wit and humor will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Donald enjoyed napping, going to the casinos, playing cards, and going on vacations with his grandchildren and with family and friends.  He had a big heart and was always there when help was needed.   Being retired he made great friends with the neighbors and took pride in taking care of our home.  Donald heart grew even bigger when his grandchildren Sophia and Daniel where born.  He loved that he was able to be there for them, get them to or off the school bus, attending performances or school events.  Sleep overs and vacations were the most special times. There was nothing better than being rewarded with hugs and kisses, watching the pride on their faces when they discovered something new or scaring them and making them scream with laughter.

Donald leaves his loving wife Sherry (Taylor) Learned, his devoted daughter Krysta Learned who helped take care of her dad during his final days and her fiancé Joseph Laramee of West Springfield, his son Jayme Russell and his fiancé Sandra Swindell of Pontiac, MI, his grandchildren Devon Russell and his wife Jordan and Sophia and Daniel Laramee, sisters Sheila Stanley, Shirley Flebotte and her husband Richard and Melody Taylor, brothers Charles Learned and his wife Lorraine and John Learned and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his siblings Sandra White, Ann Burroughs, Benjamin Learned Jr, Robert Learned, Janice Benware, Karen Burroughs, Richard Learned, his twin David Learned, Rosemary Learned and James Learned.  Donald was lost without his twin brother David. Each loss of his brothers and sisters took a piece of him. We rejoice in their reunion. Donald was very glad to have more of a relationship with his son Jayme. One of his happiest moments was when he met his grandson Devon for the first time in 2019.

The Funeral Sunday, June 6, 2021 at the West Springfield Curran-Jones Funeral Home, 109 Main Street at 12 noon followed by burial in Springfield Street Cemetery, in Feeding Hills.  The calling hours will precede the service from 11am-12noon.  The family would like to give special thanks to the D'Amour Cancer Center and Hospice of Western and Central Mass for the care given to Donald.
