Obituary

Donald F. Withee, 98, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, June 6, 2021 at home surrounded by his family. Born in Westfield son of the late George and Gladys (McDonald) Withee, he was a lifelong resident of West Springfield and a 1939 graduate of West Springfield High School. He also received his Bachelors degree in Business from Northeastern University. Donald was a retired terminal manager of the former Schaeffer Trucking Company and was also an employee of the former Gilbert & Barker Manufacturing Company for over twenty-five years. He was a United States Marine Corp veteran of World War II, serving in the Third and Fifth Divisions in the Bougainville and Iwo Jima campaigns. While in the service, Donald was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Medal with two bronze battle stars and two Purple Heart Medals. Donald was a tutor of English as a Second Language at STCC for many years, served as Secretary of the Fellowship of Retired Men, and was a Historian writer for the First Congregational Church, where he was a member. Donald leaves his wife of seventy-three years, Blanche (Fish) Withee, a son and his wife, Robert and Lee Withee of Brookline, NH, a daughter, Donna Jacobs of Great Barrington, a son-in-law, Michael Jacobs of New York City, a brother, Stewart Withee of Agawam, a sister, Louise Rogerson of Glastonbury, CT, his loving grandchildren, Laura Jacobs of New York City, Christine Denio of CO, Donald Withee of NH, Robert Withee of MA, and many great and great-great grandchildren. A service will be held in the chapel of the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam on Wednesday, June 9, 2021 at 11am. Donations may be made to the West Springfield Senior Center, 128 Park Street, West Springfield, MA 01089 or the First Congregational Church, 108 Park Street, West Springfield, MA 01089.
