Obituary

Dorothy B. (Thorsen) Bresett, passed away peacefully on April 17, 2025 at Baystate Medical Center.  She was the daughter of the late Herbert and Diana (Arooth) Thorsen.  She was born in East Providence, Rhode Island and grew up in the Hungry Hill section of Springfield.  She attended Commerce High School and sang with the Springfield Symphony chorus under the direction of Alexander Leslie.  In 1986, after thirty-five years of marriage, Dorothy was predeceased by her husband, Clifford D. Bresett, Jr.  She was employed by Forbes & Wallace in downtown Springfield, the Arthur Murray Dance Studio in Holyoke, the Massachusetts Department of Employment Security, and Grace Foods at Springfield College, where she retired.  Dorothy was a kind and caring person who made a difference in everyone's life.  After retirement, she volunteered for seventeen years at Mount Marie Health Care Center in Holyoke.  She also volunteered at the Mother of Sorrows Monastery in West Springfield where she met her good friend, the Rev. William Murphy.  She was a lifetime communicant of St. Thomas Church in West Springfield and enjoyed listening to the Catholic Radio Station, WJMJ, an evening show by Fr. John Garza, the Salvation of Christ, the Chalice of Salvation, the singing priests and Reel to Real.  Dorothy was an avid hockey fan, selling corn on cob to buy season tickets to the Springfield Indians.  She also listened to the Springfield Thunderbirds on the radio.  She enjoyed watching the New York Giants, the Chicago Bears, and the Fighting Irish Notre Dame games.  Her favorite player is Joe Montana.  She loved ballroom dancing, walking with her beloved black Labrador dogs, Annie Oakley and Hope, and reading.  Her favorite author was William Least Heat-Moon who wrote Blue Highways, which she read twice.  Dorothy and her husband in 1978 took a cross country bus trip where they visited Grand Canyon National Park, Redwood National Park, and the King Tut exhibit in Seattle, Washington.  After her husband's passing, Dorothy continued to take bus trips visiting Prince Edward Island National Park (touring the Green Gables Estate), Valley Forge National Park, and New York City (walking five blocks at the age of 82 to see the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center). She also enjoyed watching Dancing With The Stars, Columbo, and Jeopard on television.  She loved cooking and made the best turkey stuffing, macaroni and cheese and homemade pies.  Dorothy will deeply missed and forever remembered by her family.  She is survived by her two sons, Clifford Bresett of West Springfield and Stephen Bresett and his longtime partner Alice Pederson of West Springfield.  Family and friends are invited to gather for visiting hours on Wednesday from 4-7pm at Curran Jones Funeral Home, 109 Main Street in West Springfield.  The funeral will be on Thursday beginning at 8:45am at the funeral home with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 at St. Thomas Church.  Burial will take place in St. Thomas Cemetery.  Memorial donations may be made to the Sisters of St. Joseph, 577 Carew Street, Springfield, MA 01104.
