Obituary

WEST SPRINGFIELD-Dorothy (Jurkowski) Rexford, 78, died peacefully on Thursday, August 28, in Baystate Medical Center. Born in Springfield on January 8, 1936, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary (Czop) Jurkowski. After graduating from Cathedral High School in Springfield in 1954, she was employed in a law firm before her marriage to Leland Rexford, the late retired master sergeant in the U.S. Air Force. Being a military wife, Dorothy traveled far and wide, finally settling in Las Vagas, NV. She was employed as a legal secretary for the Public Defender's Office for many years until her retirement. She enjoyed golfing and boating, spending many happy times with friends who became like family. She cherished her Catholic faith, which was her strength in difficult times and her joy throughout her life. Through her charitable giving, she helped improve the lives of many, including veterans, children, families and the sick. After her husband's death, Dorothy moved back East in 2005 and settled in West Springfield to be near her family. Dorothy was predeceased by her brothers Benedict, Fabian, Chester and Joseph Jurkowski and her sisters Stephanie Bagge and Jane Kuczma. She leaves a brother Francis Jurkowski of Springfield, and three sisters Katherine Lapa of West Springfield, Helen Jurkowski of Springfield and Sister Dorothea Jurkowski, CSFN, of Brooklyn, NY, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Katherine Parent, a niece, but like a sister to Dorothy, was ever present, lending help, support and friendship at all times. Dorothy's family would like to thank Mercy Home Care, Mercy Medical Center, Baystate Medical Center, Baystate Hospice and Kindred Country Estates of Agawam for all the loving care shown to Dorothy. The funeral Mass will be at Our Lady of the Rosary Church in Springfield at 1 pm on Tuesday, September 2. Calling hours will precede the Mass at the West Springfield Curran-Jones Funeral Home from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm. Burial will take place in the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder, CO. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Academy, 12 Newel St., Brooklyn, NY 11222. For more information please go to curranjones.com.
