Obituary

Edmund D. "Ned" Bowler, 93, of Jamestown Rhode Island (for the last 5 years) and a lifelong resident of West Springfield, died Saturday August 3, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on December 5, 1930 to the late Eleanor (Sullivan) Bowler and Edmund W. Bowler. A 1948 graduate of Cathedral High School, he received an undergraduate in Education from UMASS Amherst and a masters in Education from Westfield State. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War as a signalman on the U.S.S. Caperton. He was a History teacher and coach in Monson for six years before being offered a teaching and coaching job in his hometown of West Springfield.  He taught and coached for three years, and spent the next 26 ½ years as a Principal and Vice Principal of Cowing and the West Springfield Jr High. He was a communicant of St. Mark in Jamestown RI, Sacred Heart Church in Springfield MA, and St. Thomas the Apostle Church in West Springfield MA.  Ned was a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus and was active in their bowling and softball leagues. He dedicated his life to the youth whether it be coaching or teaching CCD. He was a member of the Boys and Girls Club, a previous parish council chairman for St. Thomas the Apostle Church and was active in town politics as a town meeting member and a member of the Governor's Alliance Against Drugs. When he wasn't coaching he could be found in the stands or the audience of his children and grandchildren's events, proudly cheering on all their efforts and accomplishments. After retirement he spent time traveling with his wife Sheila and worked at the Big E. He had a competitive nature and enjoyed the many family game nights over the years. He was a fan of all sports, but most especially his Boston teams. Ned recently spent 17 days traveling around Scotland with his 3 children creating memories they will forever cherish.  His beloved wife Sheila (Harrington) Bowler died in 2008. He leaves three children Julianne Bowler of Jamestown RI, James Bowler of West Springfield, and Ellen D'Agostino and her husband Alan of Agawam; a sister Joanne Davis and four grandchildren, Ryan and his wife Maria, Nicolas, Rey and Andrew; his sister's-in-law Helen Harrington, Joan and Ron Kokernak, Ruth Daigneau, and Eleanor Burke; many nieces and nephews; his canine companions Buddy, Milo, and Lulu. Besides his wife, he was predeceased by a sister Ellen Waters. The funeral will be held at the West Springfield Curran-Jones Funeral Home Saturday at 9:00 am with Liturgy in Sacred Heart Church, Springfield at 10:00 am followed by burial in St. Thomas Cemetery.
