Edward F. Borucki, a Pearl Harbor survivor, 94, died Saturday, Oct. 17, 2015 at the Soldier's Home. Born on November 20, 1920 in Holyoke, he was the son of the late Joseph and Anna (Greski) Borucki. His dad died when he was eleven years old and he became a newsboy. From his first job with the former Springfield Daily News as a distributor at the Holyoke City Hall, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps stationed at Mt. Greylock. After that he became an apprentice machinist at the Springfield Armory. In 1940, he joined the United States Navy. After training in Newport, RI, he was assigned to the light cruiser USS HELENA. Following certification tests, he became a yeoman striker, and eventually was promoted to Fireman Second Class and then to Yeoman Third Class. He was aboard the USS HELENA on December 7, 1941, and had just left the forward engine room where the first torpedo of the attack hit. He proceeded helping the survivors until the ship was ordered back to California for repairs. After his transfer from the HELENA to the ROCKAWAY, he attended various naval training schools. On November 26, 1944, he married the former Viola Mul of Southampton, whom he first met at a social event at Mater Dolorosa Church in 1940. He was discharged from the Navy in October, 1945 as a Chief Petty Officer. He and Viola had seven sons. He worked at various companies, starting with Hancock Insulation Company and H.P. Hood. They then moved to their newly built house in Southampton in 1949. After leaving Hood, he applied for the GI Bill and got his BS in Business Administration from American International College, and his Masters degree from Boston University. In 1955, he started teaching at Chicopee High School and then transferred to Chicopee Comprehensive High School until he retired. He was a communicant of Our Lady of the Cross. His wife, Viola (Mul) Borucki died in 2006. He leaves seven sons, Edward F. Borucki, Jr., of Athens, AL, Robert A. Borucki of Chicopee, Stephen M. Borucki of Southampton, Chester C. Borucki of Southampton, Walter J. Borucki of Holyoke, Paul T. Borucki of Rocky Hill, CT, Peter J. Borucki of Southampton, and five grandchildren. He was predeceased by three brothers, Walter, Frank and Joseph Borucki and three sisters, Genevieve Malinowski, Angela Borucki and Josephine Mutch. The funeral will be Wednesday at 9am from the CURRAN-O'BRIEN FUNERAL HOME, 33 Lamb Street with a Mass in Our Lady of the Cross Church at 10. The burial will follow in Mater Dolorosa Cemetery.
