Elly Matz
1920-2012
FEEDING HILLS-
Elly Matz, 92, passed away in her sleep on Saturday, September 29, 2012. Born in a German-speaking village in the Ukraine in 1920, she dreamed as a young girl of settling in the United States. During World War II, she became a refugee and suffered countless hardships seeking safety for her family. In 1950 she immigrated to this country, found a plot of land in Feeding Hills, and built the house where she lived until her death. A deeply spiritual woman, Elly read the Bible daily and believed in the power of prayer to transform people's lives. She wrote a memoir of her life as a war refugee, It Was Worth It All, that testifies to her great faith. She is survived by her two sons, Arnold and Lenhardt, her daughter-in-law Karen, her three grandsons, Chris, Brendan, and Andrew, and her great-granddaughter Romy. Calling hours will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, October 2, 2012, with a funeral service to be held at 11:00 AM. Both will take place at Bethany Assembly of God church in Agawam. Curran-Jones Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. For online condolences please visit curranjones.com.
