1917-2014

West Springfield—Elmer Letellier, 96, of West Springfield, lovingly cared for by his wife, died in her arms on Saturday, March 8, 2014 at their home. Born in Holyoke, Massachusetts on March 22, 1917, Elmer was the son of the late Everest A. and Minnie K. (Knieling) Letellier. Elmer was a 1935 graduate of Agawam High School and was employed as a paper machine tender for thirty-nine years with the former Strathmore Paper Company, retiring in 1979. He was a member of the American Legion Post 207 in West Springfield. Elmer proudly served his country as a Staff Sergeant with the 347th Fighter Squadron, 350th Fighter Group of the 12th Air Force during WW II. He was a recipient of the WW II Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge, the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon and a Bronze Star Medal (the 4th highest medal presented in the U.S.) Elmer is survived by his beloved wife of sixty-nine years, Shirley E. (Manville) Letellier and many nieces and nephews locally and throughout the United States and Hawaii. Elmer's family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday, March 13, 2014 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Curran-Jones Funeral Home, 109 Main Street, West Springfield, MA 01089. A committal service with military honors will be held on Friday March 14, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. in the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam, MA 01001.
