AGAWAM, MA - Dr. Ernest J. Fortin Jr. MD, 77, died peacefully Monday, January 17th at Heritage Hall Nursing Home. He was born in West Springfield to Ernest and Olivine Fortin, and graduated from area Roman Catholic schools. In 1962, he graduated from Boston University Medical School, and went on to work as a psychiatrist for over 35 years. With a practice in Quincy, MA, he found much fulfillment in seeing others improve their lives and heal family relationships. Later in his career, he cared for people at Bridgewater State Hospital. For the last several years of his life he lived at Heritage Hall Nursing Home after suffering a stroke. There he lived with the caring help of family, good friends, and an extended family of the caregivers at Heritage Hall and area home care professionals which are all to be thanked. Sadly, he was predeceased by his brother George last year in an airplane accident, by his sister Lorraine in 2000, and by his wife in 1974, Muriel M. Knight. He is survived by his son, William Fortin of East Longmeadow, his sisters Claire Tremblay and Jeanne Therrien and her husband Richard, his cousins, and many nieces and nephews. The funeral will be held at the West Springfield Curran-Jones Funeral Home Saturday at 9:00am with Liturgy in St. Francis Xavier Cabrini Church followed by burial in Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
