Eugene Cyril Germain, beloved father, grandfather, brother and uncle, passed away on Saturday July 1, 2017 after a short stay in the C.W. Bill Young VA Medical Center Hospice in Bay Pines, FL. He spent his final days in the presence of his three sons before entering into eternal rest. He was 80 years old. Gene is survived by his son John Germain and his wife Maia (Gomory) of Hingham, MA; his son Joseph Germain of Wellesley, MA; his son Jason Germain and his wife Heather (Reghitto) of South Hadley, MA; his sister Lillian Ryan of Holyoke, MA; and his former spouse Joan (Guyott) Germain of South Hadley, MA. He was also predeceased by his sister Claire Thurber. Gene was a loving grandfather to Eric, Nicholas, Jack and Luke, and a caring uncle to Glen, Mike, Mark, Lynn, Ron, Melissa, and his late niece Kay. Born in Holyoke in 1937, he attended Elmwood Elementary School, Metcalf Junior High School, and Holyoke Trade High School where he was a standout basketball player. In 1960, he joined the Army. After two years of active duty, he served four more years in the reserves before being honorably discharged in 1966. Married that same year, it wasn't long before he started his family and moved to South Hadley. Gene was very active in youth sports coaching his sons in football, basketball and baseball. It was one of his great pleasures to watch his sons compete in athletics. Employed in the sales field early in his career, he began a new line of work in 1978 with Hamilton Standard in Windsor Locks, CT where he would eventually retire in 1999. With a desire for warmer weather and motivation from a friend, he moved to West Palm Beach, FL in 2003. He lived there for over 10 years before moving to Seminole, FL in 2014. In addition to his family, Gene had great affection for all of his friends from old school Holyoke to new school Florida and everyone in between. Funeral services will be held at Curran- O'Brien Funeral Home, 33 Lamb St., South Hadley on Thursday July 13, 2017 at 9:00 am followed by Mass in St. Theresa's Church at 10:00am. Burial in Notre Dame Cemetery. Calling hours are Wednesday 4pm to 7pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project: www.woundedwarriorproject.org/donate .
