Obituary

Florence M. (Theroux) Gallivan, 96, died peacefully at home with the comfort of her loving family at her side on Wednesday, June 21, 2017.   Born on July 28, 1920 in St. Guillaume de'Upton in Canada, she was the daughter of Philippe and Delima (Letendre) Theroux.  Her family emigrated from Canada when she was a young child and although the family moved several times, her fondest childhood memories were when they lived on a small farm in Westhampton.  In order to attend high school (Class of 1939) it was necessary for her to live in Easthampton where she lived with the family of "Lawyer Donais" and enjoyed taking care of their lovely young daughters in exchange for room and board.  She continued her education at Northampton Commercial College. She worked in the office of American Tissue Mills in Holyoke before she married her beloved husband of over 40 years in 1947.  After raising her children, she worked as a credit manager for the Lyman Curtain Company of Holyoke. The friendships she made continued to last her whole life. She was a longtime parishioner of St. Theresa's Parish in South Hadley.  She and her husband enjoyed many years of camping and volunteering with the Pioneer Valley Chapter 8 North American Family Camping Assoc. especially at the annual Camping Show.  She was an active longtime member of the South Hadley Council on Aging for the past 38 years where she enjoyed volunteering as past President and Treasurer of the Golden Agers, was an early leader of the Travel Club and was an avid cribbage player at the Senior Center where she enjoyed many friendships over the years. She cherished her memories of family gatherings in earlier years at her home with her sisters & brothers and their families.  She was deeply devoted to her family, enjoyed cooking (including her famous apple pie), knitting and was a passionate and skilled seamstress. Florence was preceded in death by her husband John in 1988 and all of her siblings: Alida Monat, Theodore Theroux, Theresa Roy, Simone Avery and Omer Theroux.  She will be deeply missed by her two children, Kathryn Gallivan and John Gallivan and his wife Linda of South Hadley, her two adoring grandchildren Jamie Gallivan of South Hadley and John E. Gallivan and his wife Page of Acton, and her two precious great grandchildren Tessa and Aniston Gallivan. She also leaves several nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank Holyoke VNA/Hospice Life Care especially Samantha, Natalya, Sue and Cary for their kind and gentle care. Calling hours will be Monday, June 26 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at Curran-O'Brien Funeral Home, 33 Lamb Street, South Hadley, MA.  Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 27, at 9:00 a.m. at the funeral home then proceed to a 10:00. Mass at St. Theresa's Church.  Burial will be private at St. Rose Cemetery.  Donations may be made in her memory to the South Hadley Council on Aging (New Senior Center), 45 Dayton Street, South Hadley, MA 01075.
