Obituary

NAPLES, FL & WEST SPRINGFIELD, MA - Francis J. Cataldo of Naples, FL and West Springfield, MA died October 9, 2014 at home surrounded by his loving family. Born in Lynn, MA September 11, 1939, he was the son of Frank and Elena (Matarazza) Cataldo. Fran attended Blessed Sacrament School and Sacred Heart High School in Holyoke and graduated from Wilbraham Academy in 1957. He received a BS degree in food distribution and finance from Michigan State University in 1961. Upon graduation he joined the family business, the Food Mart Supermarkets. In 1970 he founded C & W Realty with partners Mike Wallace and Helen Mattson. He retired in 2009 after passing the reins to his son Francis Cataldo, Jr. During his career he was active in many civic and charitable organizations. Fran loved sports and was a lifelong Yankees and NY Giants fan. He was an avid golfer and card room fixture after he joined Springfield Country Club in 1973. It was there that he met many lifelong friends and also served as club president from 1986-1987. In 1991, he and his wife, Marilyn, began spending winters in Naples, FL. He was a founding member of Naples National Golf Club in 1993 and served on its' board for 5 years. Family was everything to Fran. Nothing meant more to him than getting his family together at Cape Cod for family vacations, cruises or Sunday night pizza. He will be forever missed and cherished. He was predeceased by his parents and his sister Rosemarie C. Fitzpatrick. He was the beloved husband of Marilyn Brown Cataldo for 51 years. He was an amazing father to Carin Tonina (Norm) of Seattle, WA, Kimberly Thompson (Roby) of Alexandria, VA and Francis Cataldo, Jr. (Andrea) of Longmeadow, MA. He was also a devoted Grandfather to Cristina, Calvin and Nolan Thompson, Jack and Frankie Tonina and Frannie Cataldo, III. He also leaves behind a sister, Angela C. Wright of Holyoke, MA. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to meet on Tuesday, Oct. 14, at Blessed Sacrament Church, 1945 Northampton Street, Holyoke, MA for a Funeral Mass at 11am. The burial will follow in St. Jerome Cemetery, Holyoke. Calling hours are at the West Springfield Curran-Jones Funeral Home, 109 Main Street, West Springfield on Monday from 4-7pm. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate contributions to Baystate Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice, 50 Maple Street, PO Box 9058, Springfield, MA 01102, the Rosemarie C. Fitzpatrick Nursing Scholarship Fund at Holyoke Community College, 303 Homestead Avenue, Holyoke, MA 01040 or the charity of your choice.
