Obituary

Francis Arthur Johnson, 94, passed away on August 21, 2023 in the comfort of his home with his loving wife Sandra, and his family at Covenant Living Community in Plantation, Florida.  Fran and Sandy celebrated 63 years of marriage on August 20, 2023.  He was born on June 27, 1929 to the late Valdemar and Helen Johnson. Fran graduated from West Springfield High School in West Springfield, MA.  He went on to serve in the United States Army during the Korean War.  Upon his return to the states, he completed both his B.B.A. and M.B.A. at Western New England College, Springfield, MA in 1959 and 1961, respectively.  He was President, Treasurer, and Board of Governors of his college fraternity Pi Tau Kappa.  He was also President of evening school Class of 1959, Class Representative of evening school Class of 1961, and President Treasurer of Board of Governors of Western New England College Alumni Association (WNEC).  Fran was the first member of the Downes Hall of Fame at WNEC, Donor of baseball cage at Trelease Baseball Stadium (WNEC) and Founder of the Harley B. Goodrich/Fran Johnson Al Sattler Scholarship (WNEC). His first job was a caddy at Springfield Country Club.  He also worked in Johnson's diner, owned and operated by his uncle.  He was employed by Strathmore Paper Company in 1947 and was promoted to Chief Accountant.  He retired from Strathmore in 1964.  Fran worked as an IRS agent from 1964 to 1965.  He began his career at WNEC in 1965, was promoted to Comptroller and then retired in 1978.  During that work period, he also owned a private accounting practice in 1954 through 1980, operated out of his home.  Fran was passionate about golf.  Through his accounting practice, an opportunity arose for Fran to take a risk and a leap of faith to establish his own business.  Fran Johnson's Golf and Tennis was born in 1975.  Once again, he operated this business from his cellar and the two car garage his brother-in-law built. He retired from Fran Johnson's Golf and Tennis in 2006, officially beginning his next chapter which involved playing golf and moving to Florida, never wanting to see snow again.  Fran and Sandy spent the last seven years at Covenant Living of Florida, swimming in the pools, soaking in the hot tub, and enjoying Wii bowling, especially with dear friends Blainnie and Jim Alderman.  Fran and Sandy had many opportunities to travel to exotic places, passing on this love of travel to their children.  He mentored many young people who loved the game of golf or tennis and provided them their first work opportunities at Fran Johnson's Golf & Tennis family business.  The golf store provided Fran the gift of giving back to the community.  No donation request for a charity golf event was ever turned down by Fran.  He was instrumental in creating both the Young Life Golf Classic with George Thomson and Clubs for Kids, a junior golf program started by Joe Eady and the late Al Stafford.  While Fran enjoyed playing any golf course, his most favorite golf courses were Blandford CC, Shaker Farms CC and Springfield CC.  He was active in West Springfield High School Alumni Association, West Springfield Soccer Association and Western New England Athletic and Alumni Association.  As Co-Chair of the Building Committee, Fran was instrumental in the development of a new building for First Baptist Church in West Springfield, which is now Red Oak Church. Fran was predeceased by his parents, Valdemar and Helen Johnson and his youngest sister Dorothy (Dossie).  He leaves his beloved wife Sandra Zerra Johnson of 63 years, his son Valdemar A. and his wife JooRi Kim of Puglia, Italy, his daughter Cindy and her partner Mary Czajkowski of Yarmouthport, MA, his grandson Jacob K. Johnson of West Springfield, and his sister Helen A. Monko of Springfield and her husband the late John Monko.  He was also loved by Donna Kim and her husband the late James Kim, his sister-in-law Antonia Andreoli and her husband the late Louis Andreoli, and sister-in-law Lisa Lukas and her husband Tilman Lukas.  He will also be missed by several nieces and cousins. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thank you to Vitas Hospice staff and nurses and especially Dr. Selbst, Nurse Care Manager Mariutza Mercea, the entire Covenant Living staff and especially Director of Assisted Living Shurmekia McKenzie, Jennifer Shaw, Gavin DePass, Chaplain Corrie and Chaplain Erik. A Celebration of Life for Fran will be held on Saturday, September 9, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Red Oak Church in West Springfield, followed by a reception at the church.  Burial will be private for family. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be made to Covenant Living of Florida Benevolent Fund, 9215 West Broward Blvd, Plantation Fl, 33324.
