Obituary

Galina (Vegner) Grechko, 89, passed peacefully at home in West Springfield surrounded by her loving family on Sunday, September 23.  Galina was born in Velikiye Luki, Russia on December 30, 1928 to Alexander and Olga Vegner.  She spent much of her early childhood in Pskov, Russia.  Galina married her husband Vladimir Grechko in Munich, Germany.  Galina and Vladimir (who predeceased her) emigrated to the United States in 1950 living for a short time in New York City before settling in Springfield, MA.  Galina worked in the local garment industry for many years before completing a course of studies at Springfield Technical Community College to become a nursing assistant.  She worked at the Weldon Rehabilitation Hospital where she found her true calling until her retirement.  Galina cherished and was devoted to her family.  She leaves two loving daughters, Ludmila Tsairidis of Springfield and Elena Martin with her husband Jack Martin of West Springfield and her three treasured grandchildren: Nathaniel Martin with wife Kimberly of West Springfield, Anna Tsairidis of Springfield, and Zachary Martin with wife Rachel of West Springfield.  Galina also leaves her sister Inna Kerrigan with her husband Paul; nephews Michael Kerrigan with wife Heather, and Andrew Kerrigan all of Libertyville, IL; and niece Kathryn Kerrigan of Juno Beach, FL.  Galina was a dedicated parishioner of St. Nicholas Orthodox Church.  She spent her final years using her creative talents in ceramics, jewelry making, and crocheting to craft countless items that were sold at a local artisan shop and craft fairs to benefit the church.  Galina's effort contributed to the purchase of a beautiful new building.  Calling hours at the West Springfield Curran-Jones Funeral Home are Thursday 4:00 - 7:00.  The funeral service will be Friday at 9:00 at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church on 343 North Maple Street in Enfield, CT 06092.   Burial immediately following at Oak Grove Cemetery in Springfield at 11am.  For more information, please go to curranjones.com or call 413-781-7766.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Nicholas Orthodox Church at the address provided above.
