VENICE, FL – George W. Johnston, 87, formerly of West Springfield, MA died Friday at the Englewood Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center surrounded by his family. George was born in Waterville, ME and had lived in West Springfield most of his life before moving to Venice for his retirement. He studied Education at the University of Massachusetts and received his BA in History from Colby College. He later received his Master's Degree from the University of Maine and taught Social Studies at West Springfield High School until his retirement in 1984. After retirement he worked for the Pioneer Valley Automobile Club. He was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity, a former member of the West Springfield Education Association, the Massachusetts Teacher's Association and the National Education Association. George was selected by his fellow teachers and the West Springfield School committee for induction into the West Springfield Education Wall of Fame. George served with the United States Navy during World War II. He leaves his wife Bernadette (Mulvey) Johnston; their children and spouses Michael & Kim, Eric & Janet, Catherine & Dennis, David & Peggy and Jennifer & Liza ; two brothers Alfred L. (deceased) and William; a sister Catherine Ruksznis; six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A service will be held at the Sarasota National Cemetery Friday, Nov. 15th at 11:30am.
