Geraldine
Harty
January 28, 1940 – April 29, 2025
Geraldine M. (Lucey) Harty, 85, passed away peacefully in her home on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Springfield, Geraldine, or "Gerry" as most knew her, was the daughter of the late Jeremiah and Gertrude (Cawley) Lucey. She graduated from Cathedral High School, and went on to study nursing at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Boston, where she earned her RN degree in 1960, specializing in pediatric care. She also married Richard Harty of Chicopee that same year, creating seven children and a highly successful life running local businesses with him. Her children had the great good luck of being born to parents who placed the utmost value on their education, and their hard work and partnership allowed them to proudly put their children through college and graduate school. She took particular pride in the fact that all three of her daughters graduated from Wellesley College.
Gerry gave her children indelible early memories of her delicious home cooking, beautiful hand-sewn clothes and Halloween costumes, and magical Christmases, among other delights, but it was in midlife that her creative gifts truly took flight. After teaching herself the rudiments of painting, she went on to become a prolific professional artist, studying at the Art Students League in New York City, and living in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where she mounted one-woman shows of her paintings and also founded a business selling her gorgeous handmade jewelry. When she eventually settled back in West Springfield, she continued evolving as a painter, pairing it with her always stunning talent for gardening. She was able to pursue both passions until almost the end of her life.
Left to cherish her memory are three daughters, Caroline Harty Mallett (Lee Mallett) of Portsmouth, NH, Cathleen Harty of West Springfield, and Annemarie Harty of New York, NY, and two sons, Michael Harty (Lisa) of West Springfield and Joseph Harty of Longmeadow. Gerry was predeceased by two sons, Patrick and Thomas. She also leaves seven adored grandchildren, Grace, Patrick, Jack, Ryan, Daniel, Matthew and Brendan. Gerry was predeceased by her former husband, Richard Harty, and her brother, Robert Lucey. Calling hours will be Saturday, May 10, 2025 at the West Springfield Curran Jones Funeral Home, 109 Main Street, West Springfield, from 11:00am-12:30pm. A Celebration of Life will follow from 12:30-1:00pm.
