Gwendolyn Glass died on December 7, 2016 at Loomis House in Holyoke. The daughter of Mabel (Anderson) and Clarence Glass, Gwen was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on August 3, 1924. She graduated from the Berkeley Institute (now Berkeley Carroll School) in 1942 and went on to graduate from Mount Holyoke College in 1946. Gwen had three distinguished careers. Starting at Doubleday Publishing Co. in 1946 she was Manager of Foreign and Book Club Rights Department until 1970. She moved to South Hadley, MA and started her second career as Director of Development for Mount Holyoke College. When she retired in 1986, she was The Secretary of the College and Secretary of the Board of Trustees. During her tenure, she raised millions in deferred gifts and capital gifts. Her third career was as a lifelong volunteer leader and philanthropist. As early as 1949, she was President of the Brooklyn Mount Holyoke Club and subsequently President of the Mount Holyoke Club of New York. She became first Vice President of Mount Holyoke Alumnae Association in 1961 and as regional chair for the Fund For the Future raised $17,000,000. In 1956, she received the Alumnae Medal of Honor, the youngest person to receive this award at that time. Her volunteer leadership was evident in many organizations in New York City, as President of the Brooklyn Junior League, 1954-1956, President of Berkeley Institute Alumnae Association, 1952-l955, and the Visiting Nurse Association of Brooklyn. Upon moving to South Hadley and the Pioneer Valley she was on the Board of Tribunes for WGBY Channel 57 Public Television, 1994-2004, and Chairman of the Board for the Fine Arts Center, University of Massachusetts, Amherst, 1997-1999. Before her move into Loomis Village, she was on the Loomis Board from 1985-1997 in many capacities, including as Secretary and as President and as a committee member for Finance, Accreditation and Philanthropy. For this outstanding leadership and commitment, she received the Elvira Whiting Ball Award in 2006 and a Citation from the House of Representatives and the State Senate of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. She served in several leadership roles for the First Congregational Church in South Hadley as Chairman of the Board of Trustees and on the Stewardship Committee in the 1980's and for All Saints Episcopal Church in South Hadley, she served on the stewardship committee where her long-time friend, Mary E. Tuttle had been confirmed. Gwen is survived by her three nieces and their families: Sandra and Stetson Tinkham of Alexandria, VA, Suzanne and Bayard Kellam of Naples, FL, and Laurie and Randall Whiting of Nellysford, VA. She had recently become a great, great aunt to Charlotte Albertina Teixeira, a namesake for her sister, Charlotte Glass Shaffer who predeceased her. A memorial service will be held at the First Congregational Church, One Church Street, South Hadley 01075 on Saturday, May 20,2017 at 11:00. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in tribute to the life of Gwendolyn Glass to The First Congregational Church.
