February 25, 1931 – February 7, 2018
Harold Mario Passerini, 86, passed away Wednesday, February 7th at home. He was born in Springfield and lived most of his life in West Springfield. Harold opened Bertelli's Liquor Mart in 1969 with the help of his mentor, brother in law and best friend Angelo Bertelli. He took great pride in building strong relationships and serving the community. His love was playing sports with his many longtime Memorial Avenue friends. As a young man, Harold spent most of his time at the Eastern States Exposition as a "rink rat", growing up, working and learning the game from Eddie Shore and skating every chance he could get. He loved to play hockey and exceled at the sport from an early age, playing for the Springfield Rifles and Springfield Flyers. He went on to play for his good friend and coach, Amo Bessone, at Michigan State and then played in Milan, Italy. He served in the United States Army from 1950-1952. Harold was well known in Western Massachusetts for the skate shop he started in the basement of Bertelli's where he sharpened skates and served generations of hockey families. Harold cherished long time friendships. He was a proud member of the West Springfield friend group, the "Dead- Line Gang", enjoyed his mornings at Memos, and always looked forward to his Thursday night dinners with so many of his lifelong friends every week. He was predeceased by his father and mother, Biagio Passerini and Angela Muselli Passerini, his sister Valia Debiasio and his beloved daughter Jill Passerini. He leaves his sister Jill Bertelli of Connecticut, his two sons Jay of Agawam and Michael and his wife Deborah of Feeding Hills, his grandchildren, Jenna, Johnny, Niko, Anthony, Mario, and Angelo Passerini as well as many nieces and nephews. He also leaves his dear friend and companion Mary Jean Vielantti of West Springfield. Harold touched the lives of so many people and will be truly missed by all.
