Harvey A. Miller
1924-2013
WEST SPRINGFIELD-Harvey A. Miller, born Sept. 17, 1924 in Greenfield, MA passed away on June 6, 2013 at Mercy Hospital of complications following a fractured hip. He was predeceased by his parents Sarah (Cutler) Miller and Samuel Miller, formerly of Agawam, MA and his niece Debra (Miller) Leslie, of Jupiter, FL. Harvey was raised in Greenfield, Brooklyn (NY) and West Springfield, graduating from West Springfield High School in 1942. He was a Senior Inspector for the Torpedo Control Ordinance, for the U. S. Navy (1942-1944)..... a civilian job. He went to the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa, graduating in 1948 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Advertising Design. After Graduation he lived in Agawam, Longmeadow and Wilbraham before moving to West Springfield in 1986, when he married Lynn (Madelyn K.) Miller. Harvey worked in Advertising for Hadley Furniture and later for Yale Genton as Advertising Director for 23 years. He owned H. Miller Advertising Agency working with numerous local accounts and worked with Country Squire Furniture as it's advertising director for Newspaper, TV and Direct Mail for many years, until his retirement in 2006. Harvey was a member of Indian Orchard Lodge of Mason for over 60 years, a member of Sinai Temple for over 50 years. He was also an avid downhill skier and a member of the Springfield Ski Club for 52 years, including teaching skiing there for 11 years. Both Harvey and his wife enjoyed ski trips to Colorado, Western Canada and Vermont for many years together. On ski trips to Colorado, they were frequently joined by his brother Jerry, also an avid downhill skier. He leaves his wife of 26+ years, Madelyn (Kelley) Miller; his brother, Jerry Miller and his nephew Matthew Miller and his wife Patty all of Denver, CO, and his two sons Jonathan Miller and his wife Valentina of Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada and his son Brian L. Miller of Wilbraham and San Diego, California. He also leaves his two stepsons Todd L. Sargent and his wife Laura of Somerville, MA, and Mark W. Sargent and his wife Tina of Palmyra, Virginia, and five grandchildren, Joshua Aaron Sargent, Tara Denise Sargent, Alec Sean Miller, Jacob Samuel Miller and Nina Sargent-Weeks, a brother-in-law Alan Kelley and his wife Carol of Shutesbury, MA and a number of cousins and their families in Florida. The family wishes to thank Cheryl, a Visiting Angel who cared for Harvey at home during the past two years, and the dedicated staff at Heritage Hall North who cared for him during the past three months, as well as the staff and Doctors who helped him during his short stay at Mercy Hospital. The funeral service will be Tuesday at 3 pm at the West Springfield Curran-Jones Funeral Home. Calling hours will precede the service on Tuesday from 1-3 pm. Private burial.
