Obituary

Hedwige A. Fennell died Friday at the East Longmeadow Skilled Nursing Center. Born in Springfield on Phoenix Terrace, she was the daughter of William J. and Mae (O'Rourke) Fennell. She was a graduate of Cathedral High School in Springfield and Suffolk University in Boston, where she received a degree in social sciences with honors. She also graduated from Bay Path Junior College in Longmeadow in 1942 and from there, joined the American Red Cross. She traveled overseas with the Red Cross and was employed with the military at Pearl Harbor, the Philippine Islands and Japan for five years. She attended George Washington University in Washington, D.C. and San Jose State University in California for graduate studies and became a social work supervisor for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in Springfield. She was also employed at the American Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C. for several years. She was predeceased by three brothers, Fr. Joseph G. Fennell, S.J., William J. Fennell Jr., and John F. Fennell; and two sisters, Marguerite Charon and Mary Agnes Fennell. She also leaves several nieces and nephews. The graveside service will be Wednesday at 1:00 pm in St. Michael's Cemetery. West Springfield Curran-Jones Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
