Obituary

Homer F. Hanscom, Jr., 90, went to be with his beloved wife, Carol (Walker) Hanscom, who predeceased him in 1991, on Monday, February 20, 2017 at the Soldier's Home in Holyoke. Born in Springfield, son of the late Homer F. Sr., and Winifred K. (Blair) Hanscom, he lived in West Springfield since 1941. Homer was a Naval Veteran of World War II serving on board the USS Dennis DE 405, where he was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries received during the Battle of Leyte Gulf. He was also awarded WWII Victory Medal, Philippine Liberation Theatre Medal with two bronze stars, the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Medal with four stars and Presidential Citation. He was a Veteran of the Korean Conflict where he served aboard the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt. Homer was a communicant of the Church of the Good Shepherd. He was a Corporator of the West Springfield Boys & Girls Club, past Vice-President of the Ramapogue Historical Society, former Director of the West Springfield Soccer Association as well as a coach. He loved candlepin bowling and was a former member of the West Springfield Workers Bowling League. Homer was employed by James River-Premoid Corporation for twenty-nine years as a foreman in the shipping receiving and inspection department. He was also employed by Big Y for ten years and also Hulmes Transportation. He was an avid sports fan of all sports, especially the Red Sox and the Barclays Soccer. Homer's family would like to offer a special thank you to the nurses and aides at the Holyoke Soldier's Home for their devotion to our soldiers. Homer was predeceased by a brother, Robert, and his sisters, Shirley, Winifred, June, Ruth, Beverly and Audrey. Homer is survived by a son and his wife, Michael and Sue Hanscom of Agawam, two daughters, Jane Chapman of West Springfield, Janice Tindell and her husband Richard of West Springfield, a sister, Marcia Barker of Agawam, nine grandchildren seventeen great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. The funeral will be Saturday at 11am at the WEST SPRINGFIELD CURRAN-JONES FUNERAL HOME, 109 Main Street with a spring burial in Ashleyville Cemetery. Calling hours are Friday from 4-7pm.
