Obituary

West Springfield-Jean Hodge DeVeuve lived a full and contented life, and she died peacefully at her home of 60 years in West Springfield at the age of 91 surrounded by her loving family and her wonderful caregiver, Anna Asiedu. She was born June 1st 1923 in Springfield, MA to (Mary) Madelene Mitchell Hodge and Raymond Clifton Hodge. She was married for 61 years to Ernest Arthur DeVeuve who predeceased her in 2008. She is survived by her daughter, Gwen DeVeuve Whelan and her husband, Tim and their daughter, Laura of Pelham, MA; her daughter Gail DeVeuve Benkert of Arlington, VA and her children Stephen and Suzanne; and her son Donald DeVeuve of Needham, MA and his wife, Joanne and their daughter, Madeline. Jean grew up in West Springfield, received an art degree from Boston University, and went on to teach art for many years in Enfield CT., but most of all, she was a nurturing mother: As children, we returned home to cookies, and as adults, we returned home to comfort food and love. She was a very talented watercolor artist who developed a love of sumi-e painting, and also loved to make her own Valentine cards for her dear Ernie; our houses are filled with her lovely works. Music was very important to her, and she had a beautiful soprano voice. She was also very talented at sewing and knitting. She and Ernie enjoyed many trips together and spent several years as "snowbirds" in Sarasota, FL. We will miss her blueberry pies, because no one can make a pie like she did. But we will most miss the love and caring that was always there in her arms. The memorial service will be Wednesday at 11 am in the Mittineague Congregational Church, 1840 Westfield Street, West Springfield. Burial will take place in the spring.
