Jean
Weaver
February 26, 1938 – June 23, 2025
Jean (Young) Weaver, 87, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 23, 2025 at Wing Memorial Hospital with her family by her side. Born in Springfield, MA, daughter of the late Harold and Dorothy (Johnson) Young, she grew up in West Springfield and graduated from Northfield School for Girls and then received a degree as a dental hygienist from the University of Vermont in Burlington. Jean started her career in Maine, where she met her husband, Charlie. Together, they started a family and moved around a bit prior to settling in West Springfield. There, Jean was active in the community, helping to start the West Springfield Torpedoes Swim Team, volunteering in all the activities her children participated in. Her van was always full of kids, and her home was welcome to all as well. Jean was an active member of the Church of the Good Shepard and served on the board of the West Springfield Boys and Girls Club for many years. She was a member of the Daughters of the Nile and she also actively supported husband Charlie in all his activities with the Shriners. Jean was a talented knitter, and many still wear the works of art she created. She loved puzzles and traveling the world with Charlie. She especially loved spending time at their beloved cottage in Maine where she waterskied often until almost her 80th birthday. She was a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother and friend who put the needs of others before her own. She was known for always remembering anniversaries and birthdays. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family and friends. Jean and Charlie retired to Largo, Florida, where again she became involved in their new community. She helped organize dances, and the annual Thanksgiving Dinners which brought the community together. She was also a volunteer at the Clearwater Aquarium, that brought her much joy. She moved back to Western Massachusetts in 2022 after the passing of her husband Charlie. This move was difficult for her, but she led by example, showing us all that every day is a gift, and no matter what happens in life, we can and should always find joy each day. The family especially would like to thank the staff and friends she made at Christopher Heights of Belchertown Assisted living, for showing her so much compassion, dignity and love. In addition to her parents, Jean was predeceased by her loving husband, Charles H. Weaver in 2022, a son, Michael Weaver (2015), a daughter, Linda Hank (2019) and a son-in-law, Glenn Hastings (2021). She leaves a son and his wife, Andrew and Angela Weaver of Westfield, a daughter, Elizabeth Hastings of Royalston, MA, a son-in-law, Mark Hank of Reading, MA, a daughter-in-law, Melanie Weaver of Melrose, MA, a sister. Carolyn Purrington of Eastham, seven grandchildren, Benjamin, Ryan, Emily, Josh and Jake Weaver, Sara and Zack Hank, a great-granddaughter, Pasleigh Wilson, a step-grandson, Jesse Lestings, and her exchange student "son" Rolf Kratz and his wife Antje and their children Robert and Jan of Dusseldorf Germany. Jean also leaves nieces and nephews, and a large circle of loving friends. Calling hours are Monday, July 21, 2025, from 8:30-10am at Curran Jones Funeral Home, 109 Main Street, West Springfield followed by a Funeral Home Service at 10. The burial will follow in the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Shriner's Hospital, 516 Carew St., Springfield, MA, The West Springfield Boys and Girls Club 615 Main Street, West Springfield, MA 01089 or to Mike Weaver Helping Friends Forever Foundation, 77 Godfrey Lane, Milford, MA 01757.
