Julia Margaret
Skowera
April 22, 1924 – January 8, 2017
Julia M. (Dursa) Skowera, 92, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, Jan. 8, 2017 in Baystate Medical Center. Born in Windsor Locks, daughter of the late Martin and Margaret (Serva) Dursa, she was a 1941 cum laude graduate of Windsor Locks High School. Married to George J. Skowera, Sr. in 1948 she moved with him to Feeding Hills in 1951 and remained in that home for 65 years. She was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary, The Ladies Sunrise Golf League at Feeding Hills Country Club, and the Agawam Senior Center. Julia was an avid bowler for several years and then switched over to golf. She scored two holes in one during her golf career. She was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church of Feeding Hills. Sharp of mind and quick of wit to the end, Julia was also a fervent reader, devouring 2-3 books per month. To Julia family was more important than affiliations and hobbies. She partnered with her husband George to raise 5 children. This meant attending hundreds of baseball games, dance recitals, PTA meetings, and church functions. Julia and her husband worked hard to provide their children with a college education. An expert at crochet she made blankets for her children as they entered college. We now realize that when we wrap ourselves in a blanket our mother made, we are wrapping ourselves in her love. She was predeceased by her husband George J. Skowera, Sr., in 1988 and by a son Paul C. Skowera in 2011. She leaves two sons, George J. Skowera, Jr. and his wife Deborah of West Springfield, Richard D. Skowera and his wife Dale of Longmeadow, and two daughters Diane E. Escobar and her husband Manuel of Norwood, MA, Christine M. Smith and her husband Greg of Westfield, and seven grandchildren, Bryan Skowera, Jennifer Skowera, Jonathan Skowera, Zachary Smith, Manny Escobar, Alex Smith and Jake Smith. The funeral will be Saturday at 9am from the AGAWAM CURRAN-JONES FUNERAL HOME, 745 Cooper Street, with a Mass at Sacred Heart Church at 10. The burial will follow in Agawam Center Cemetery. Calling hours are Friday from 4-7pm. Donations may be made to Sacred Heart Church, 1061 Springfield Street, Feeding Hills, MA 01030.
