1922 – 2015

WEST SPRINGFIELD – Loring M. Caney, 93, of Robinson Road died Tuesday, August 4, 2015 in the Holyoke Soldier's Home surrounded by his loving family. Loring was born in Holyoke, the son of the late Richard and Ruth (Collins) Caney, and has lived in West Springfield most of his life. He was a graduate of Technical High School, Fitchburg State College and received his graduate degree from Westfield State College. A 33-year Teacher/Guidance Counselor for the City of Springfield, he retired in 1985. Loring served in the United States Coast Guard during World War II aboard a U.S.C.G. Destroyer Escort from 1942-46, and spent 23 years in the Coast Guard Reserves retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He was a member of the Reserve Officer's Association, the Knights of Columbus in West Springfield and the Springfield Retired Teacher Association. An avid Red Sox fan, his greatest joy in life was watching his grandchildren's sporting events. He leaves his loving wife of 68 years Frances (Robitaille) Caney; four children Michael and his wife Lourdes of Belchertown, Christine Caney of West Springfield, Matthew and his wife Chris of Palmer, and Timothy and his wife Doreen of West Springfield; two sisters Madalyn Fernands and Beverly Haley; eight grandchildren Britany Samberg, Elise Kowal, Lauren, Catherine, Tara, Kristin, Luke and Natalie Caney and a great granddaughter Harper. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his siblings Mary Ford, Richard, Charles, James, and Theresa Caney. The family would like to thank the staff at the Soldier's Home for the wonderful care provided to Loring over the past few months. The funeral will be held at the West Springfield Curran-Jones Funeral Home Friday, August, 7, 2015 at 9:00am with Liturgy of Christian Burial in St. Thomas the Apostle Church at 10:00am followed by internment in St. Thomas Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held Thursday, August 6, 2015 from 4:00 – 7:00pm. For more details please visit curranjones.com.
