Obituary

Lorraine Beverly (Saben) Harlow of West Springfield passed away on December 20, 2020.  She was born in Worcester, MA on August 15, 1935.  She is survived by her daughters, Elizabeth Harlow-Harris (West Springfield, MA) and her wife Christine; Lynn Chase (Scarborough, ME) and her husband Arthur; and Sandra Glazier (Hadley, MA) and her husband Todd.  She is also survived by six grandchildren:  Christina Miller (and her husband Jesse), Andrew Chase, Molly Glazier, Megan Glazier, Rose (Macenzie) Harlow-Harris, Kayleigh Harlow-Harris, and her great grandson, Maxwell Miller.  Lorraine is pre-deceased by her loving husband Ward H. Harlow, Jr., her parents Ernest, and Florence (Day) Saben and her siblings Harold Saben, Jean Couture, Raymond Saben and Patricia Tufts. Lorraine was a 1953 graduate of North High School and a 1957 graduate of Worcester State Teacher's College.  Lorraine began her teaching career in Springfield at Armory Street School and Indian Orchard Elementary School as a Kindergarten teacher.  She left teaching to raise her family and then returned to teaching in the West Springfield community.  She was a substitute teacher throughout town, until she became a full-time teacher at Tatham Elementary School.  She loved her students and touched the lives of so many families in West Springfield. After retiring in August 2000, Lorraine stayed connected with the town's retired teachers and the Tatham retired teachers' group.  She loved her monthly breakfasts at Cracker Barrel with all her friends and former teachers.  This was a bright spot in her retirement, and she loved seeing everyone as they shared memories and retirement adventures. She was an active member of Mittineague United Methodist Church (now West Springfield UMC) for more than 60 years.  During her time at the Church, Lorraine was on the Board of Education and a founding leader of the Mittineague Methodist Pre-School (MMPS).  She was also an active member of the United Methodist Women's group (serving several terms as President).  She loved working at the church's Big E project, serving meals to 4-H participants.  In addition, she held numerous other leadership roles in the church community. After retirement, Lorraine and Ward traveled the coast of Maine exploring lighthouses and beaches.  She loved the ocean and lighthouses, and Biddeford Pool was a favorite location!  Lorraine loved her family, and her pride and joy were her grandchildren and great grandson.  Lorraine loved reading stories to all her grandchildren.  She loved celebrating the Holidays together and worked hard to make all of them memorable for her family.  Her favorite holiday was Thanksgiving because all of our families (and often extended family) joined around the old farmhouse table to share a home cooked meal and the most amazing pies that she had baked. Lorraine will be remembered for her gentle ways, her love and compassion!  A celebration of her life will be held at later date when her all family and friends are able to gather safely. The West Springfield Curran-Jones Funeral Home is handling all arrangements.  For online condolences please visit curranjones.com. Memorial contributions can be made to West Springfield United Methodist Church (800 Amostown Road, West Springfield, MA  01089) or Harmony House of Western Massachusetts (66 View Street, Chicopee, MA  01020).
