Obituary

Louis E. Massoia Jr.

1931 – 2021

Feeding Hills – Louis E. Massoia Jr., 89, took his last trip around the bases and made it safely home on Tuesday at Baystate Medical Center. Lou was born in Springfield, son of the late Louis and Lusina (Pomina) Massoia, and has lived in Agawam most of his life.  Lou was an accomplished athlete and played professional baseball in the Boston Braves organization. He hung up his cleats at age 85, after playing years of softball with the Western Mass Relics. He was involved with the Sacred Heart Athletic Association, where he was a colorful umpire and managed the concession stand with his wife Viola for many years.  He also enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren play sports. A proud United States Korean War Veteran, he served with the United States Army Infantry as an aide to General Creighton W. Abrams. As Sargent First Class, Lou fought on the front line in many battles, including Pork Chop Hill, and received many decorations. Lou retired as a Senior Field Auditor for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. He was a member of the Agawam School Committee, the Springfield Sports Hall of Fame Selection Committee, the  American Legion, and many other community organizations. He also volunteered at the Massachusetts Veteran's Memorial Cemetery, was a board member at Greater Springfield Senior Services, and was a Finance Council Member of Sacred Heart Church in Feeding Hills.  It is hard to list all of Lou's many achievements, but his proudest accomplishment was his loving family. He leaves his wife of 59 years, Viola (Blair) Massoia; three sons Scott and his wife Bonnie, Blair and his wife Lynn, and Brett and his wife Michele; five grandchildren Anthony Sr. and his wife Heather, Angelina, Marysa, Lyle and Arden; three great grandchildren; Anthony Jr., Mya and A.J. He also leaves his sister Gloria Pelow. Lou was predeceased by his sister Mary Mapson. A private funeral will be held in Sacred Heart Church, followed by burial in the Massachusetts Veteran's Memorial Cemetery. The Agawam Curran-Jones Funeral Home is handling all arrangements.
