Obituary

Manuel S. Fernandes, 88, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, December 10, 2015 in Holyoke Hospital. Born in Acushnet, MA, son of the late Francisco and Maria (Duarte) Fernandes, he lived in Chicopee for over fifty years. Manuel worked as a master mechanic for Daniel O'Connell & Sons Construction for forty years, retiring in 1988. He was a member and past president of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 98. Manuel was a World War II Marine Corp veteran and a member of the American Legion in Chicopee. His passions were finished carpentry, his family, and traveling to Aruba. He was a communicant of St. Patrick's Church, South Hadley. His wife, Florence (DeRosa) Fernandes, died in 1998. He leaves a son and his wife, David Manuel Fernandes and Rosalind Forti of Ludlow, two daughters and their husbands, Kathleen and Stephen Black of Longmeadow/South Hadley, Lori A. and Richard Cardinal of South Hadley, his loving companion, Carol (Christofori) Benoit of Chicopee, Carol's family, a son, Christopher and his wife Kerry and daughters, Isabelle & Rubie, JW and his wife Allison and daughter, Bridget, Matthew and his wife Candace and children, Liam and Brook. Manuel also leaves four brothers, James, Ceasar and Joseph Fernandes all of South Hadley, Virgil Fernandes of Coeur d'Alene, ID, a sister, Marion McCormick of Holyoke, four grandchildren, Amy DelMonte of Chicopee, Mark R. DelMonte of West Springfield, Brett Cardinal of Amherst, and Amanda Cardinal of San Diego, CA. He was predeceased by two brothers, Antonio Fernandes, Alfred Fernandes, a sister, Maria Alves, and a son-in-law, Mark A. DelMonte. The funeral will be Wednesday at 9am from the CURRAN-O'BRIEN FUNERAL HOME, 33 Lamb Street with a Mass in St. Patrick's Church at 10. Burial in St. Rose Cemetery, all in South Hadley. Calling hours are Tuesday from 4-7pm. Donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.
