Obituary

WEST SPRINGFIELD – Mrs. Margaret Therese Daly peacefully entered into Eternal Life on Saturday, November 8, 2014 at the age of 86. Mrs. Daly was born in New York, New York on March 15, 1928, the younger daughter of Joan and Maurice. She graduated from Fort Hamilton High School in Brooklyn, New York, matriculated into City College of New York, and later attended Fordham University. She was always a quick study, and taught herself to dance by watching classes of the children who could afford lessons. After lots of practice at home, she joined the Rockettes in New York City and performed regularly at Radio City Music Hall. Later after moving to Massachusetts, Marge commuted to Cambridge for additional courses at Harvard University.

At the age of 22 she married a General Practitioner, Stephen L. Daly M.D., left the Rockettes and had seven children over the course of ten years. She loved tap dancing and continued to evolve her talent with The West Side Tappers. At the age of 70 she was awarded the title of Queen in the Miss Senior Sweetheart of Massachusetts Pageant, after choreographing and dancing a tap routine to "Forty-Second Street". She then was honored to perform this number on live national TV on The Phil Donahue Show. Marge was also a talented pianist, and sang regularly with award-winning chapters of the Sweet Adelines and Sound of New England. She continued to develop her performance skills until she lost a lung at age 74.

Marge's offspring have always been the center of her life. She considers herself very blessed to have married Stephen and to have had seven accomplished children and their spouses: Dr. William Daly and Nancy Grice, Dr. Robert and Margaret Daly, Thomas and Kathaleen Daly, Joan and Benjamin Sprachman, Dr. Ruth Daly, Maryann and Scott Cooper and Joseph and Susan Daly. She also leaves twenty-two grandchildren: Erin, Elizabeth, Emily, Susan, William, Stephen, James, Kimberly, David, Michael, Robert Jr., Kristopher, Meaghan, Sean, Brian, Melissa, David, Margaret, Victoria, Patrick, John and Owen, and six great grandchildren: Kayla Robert, Addison Rose, Niall, William, Brielle, and Heidi. She is predeceased by her husband Stephen, and her sister Anne Mulski.

She traveled to many countries with her husband Stephen; some of her favorite trips included skiing in the Swiss Alps, swimming in the Dead Sea, riding camels to Egyptian pyramids and visiting distant museums. Marge then took up oil painting and produced some beautiful work. She has always been socially active and participated in a number of groups, including two bridge groups, an investment club, the Ramapogue Women's Club and The Red Hat Society.

Marge has been a devout member of the Catholic Church, and an active member of St. Thomas the Apostle Parish in West Springfield for five decades. In 1958 Marge co-founded, with her husband Stephen, the Benedict-Scholastica Society. This society provided for and supported mission work and seminaries in this country and throughout the world for forty-five years, working through the Propagation of the Faith Society in the Diocesan Offices. For example the Benedict-Scholastica Society contributed to seminaries in Tanzania, Nigeria, and other African Countries.

Her wake will be held on Friday, November 14 from 4 to 7pm at Curran-Jones Funeral home, 109 Main Street, West Springfield, MA. Her funeral liturgy will be on Saturday, November 15 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 47 Pine Street, West Springfield, MA, followed by burial in St. Thomas Cemetery.
