Margaret Holly
Scortino
December 25, 1945 – May 15, 2020
Margaret Holly Scortino, 74, passed away on Friday May 15, 2020 after a brief illness. Holly arrived on Christmas Day in 1945; the fourth of five children born to John and Mary Donohue. She grew up surrounded by the love of her parents and siblings on Westford Ave. in Springfield. Her father, John, worked as a florist; first at Schlatter's then later at Smail's. Holly worked with her father producing flower arrangements. Working in horticulture would become a lifelong passion as well as a career. She graduated from Cathedral High School where she was a cheerleader. At the time an innocuous title, "Cheerleader" would become a second, highly valuable skillset not fully realized until she began a family of her own which she did; marrying Richard Scortino in 1970. Holly and Richard were best friends and remained so for 50 years. Their marriage produced two children; son, Marc and daughter, Mary Lynn. Holly doted upon both children and her husband. Her family was her greatest achievement and she cared for and nurtured it as she would the most delicate Orchid. As her children reached adolescence Holly returned to work eventually spending many years as a teacher's aide in the horticulture program at the Lower Pioneer Valley Educational Collaborative trade high school. Equally adept at replacing spark plugs in chainsaws as she was providing a shoulder to cry on for her students, Holly excelled proving herself a worthy educator. Upon retirement her work as an educator continued in a more subdued fashion. Holly quietly continued to mentor and counsel friends and family alike with a wisdom, dignity and ease of being that simply put, inspired others to "be better". Holly's spirit now rejoins her husband, Richard, parents, John and Mary Donohue and siblings; brother, John-Paul Donohue and sister, Anne Marie Russo. Her love continues to shine upon her children and their spouses, Katie Simlick and David Freedman, grandchildren Sam and Maggie Freedman, remaining sisters Patricia and Claire, sister-in-law, Mary Lou Donohue, brothers-in-law; James Agnew, Tom Russo and Walter Krueger, 12 nieces and nephews and countless close friends. A private burial at Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Agawam is planned for August 13 th . A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Presently and in lieu of flowers donations may be made to the "Richard and Holly Scortino Memorial Scholarship Fund" which will make funds available to students of the Lower Pioneer Valley Educational Collaborative who seek a path towards further education or entrepreneurship. Donations can be made via check made payable to: RICHARD AND HOLLY SCORTINO MEMORIAL FUND and mailed to 4 Cobblestone Drive, Franklin, MA 02038 or electronically via PayPal to: paypal.me/ScortinoMemorialFund For more information or to make online condolences please go to curranjones.com.
