WEST SPRINGFIELD– Marion E. (King) Klauber, 94, died Friday, August 29 at Wingate of East Longmeadow. She was born in Springfield and grew up in West Springfield, where she graduated from West Springfield High School in the class of 1937. It was in West Side that she met and married Barney Klauber and raised their children. Upon her husband Barney's retirement, they moved to Lake Worth, Florida, and returned to western Massachusetts later in their lives.
Marion was first and foremost a devoted mother and wife, but after her children entered high school, she became a secretary for the West Springfield School System's Night Division. She was a longtime member of the Mittineague Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School. Marion often volunteered her service for worthy causes, including the Boy and Girl Scouts, the American Cancer Society and many more. She was past president of the West Springfield P.T.A., the West Springfield Gridiron Moms, and the local chapter of the March of Dimes.
Marion was an avid bowler, belonging to leagues in both West Springfield and Agawam, and she once appeared on Candlepins for Cash. After bowling, Marion took on the challenge of golf, where she scored a hole-in-one and became known as an excellent chipper and putter. She played out of St. Anne's Golf Course, the Tekoa Country Club, the Agawam Country Club and Lake Worth (FL) Country Club.
She loved playing cards and bingo. With the friends she met bowling, Marion formed a weekly "girls night" card club that met for fifty plus years. She also enjoyed her Bingo, anytime, anywhere.
Barney Klauber, her husband of sixty-eight years, died in 2008. She leaves two sons; Robert and his wife Susan of Fairfield, Iowa; Douglas and his wife Maureen of Nashua, NH; two daughters Bonita Ferragut and her husband George of Melbourne, FL; and Sandra Andre and her husband Stephen of East Granby, CT.; eight grandchildren, twelve and a half great-grandchildren and a multitude of nieces and nephews. She also leaves a brother, Eugene King, and his wife. Lori, of Norwich Lake and her lifelong friend of over eighty years, Claire Robinson Goldsmith, of Agawam. Marion was predeceased by her sister, Ruth LaFogg, and her brothers, William King and George King.
A committal service will be held in the Massachusetts Veteran's Memorial Cemetery at 3pm on Friday, September 26th.
