Key Largo, FL – Mark Dino Mirolli, 63, formerly of West Springfield died unexpectedly December 28, 2021. He was born in Holyoke the son of Gino Mirolli and the late Janet (Garrity) Mirolli. He grew up in West Springfield, and was a graduate of West Springfield High School where he was a three sport athlete in football, basketball and track. He earned a chemical engineering degree from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and a mechanical engineering degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He began his work as a Director of Technology Development for Combustion Engineering which led him to Exergy Inc. in San Francisco, where Mark was hired as a Senior Vice President of Engineering. Shortly thereafter, he became Chief Executive Officer succeeding the company's founder. Under Mark's leadership, he and his team of engineers and scientists patented Kalina Cycle technology and processes that were incorporated in power plants that Exergy helped to build in Japan, Iceland, Germany, Pakistan, The United Arab Emirates, and China. At the time of his passing, Mark was the Chief Technology Officer for Kalina Power and was arguably the preeminent authority on Kalina Technology in the world. Over his career of more than 35 years, he has authored over 25 major published papers on advanced power plant design and operations. Mark was a widely regarded thermal power expert and one of the original minds behind the development and commercialization of fluidized bed boiler technology. Mark also inspired others while sharing his knowledge teaching at Florida International University in Miami. Mark loved getting together with family and friends for a round of golf, fine dining, or sharing his love of sports. He learned to play the guitar later in life, enjoyed scuba diving around the world, and taking his boat out on the ocean. He was a communicant of St. Justin Martyr Church and member of the Italian Club, both in Key Largo. He did countless hours of volunteer work throughout his life for churches he attended and for animal shelters. Mark is predeceased by his mother Janet and the love of his life Christina (Szalicki) Mirolli. He is survived by his father Gino Mirolli, his brother Tom and wife Sue of Feeding Hills, MA, his brother Michael of Chicopee, MA, and his sister Gina (Mirolli) Robbins and her husband Norm of Southwick, MA, his wife's siblings, John Szalicki, Francine Szalicki, Andrew Szalicki and Joanne Yacovone, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He also leaves his two lifelong friends David Hansmann of San Francisco, CA, and Michael Kelleher of Fort Lauderdale, FL. On behalf of our family we would like to thank all of our extended family, friends and Mark's business colleagues for their thoughts, prayers and condolences during this difficult time. A service for family and close friends will be held at the West Springfield Curran-Jones Funeral Home on Thursday, January 20, 2022. Calling hours will be from 9:00 - 10:30am with Liturgy of Christian Burial at St. Thomas the Apostle Church at 11:00am. A private burial will be scheduled in the spring.
