Martha Larkin
Martha Anne (Barnfather) Larkin, 54, died Friday, December 28, in Arundel, Maine. Born June 7, 1958 in Springfield, MA, summered in Kennebunk until she moved there in 1995. She was the daughter of the late Charles Barnfather and Eva Barnfather of Arundel, Maine, formerly of West Springfield. Martha was preceded by her husband Christopher, her son Charles, sister Janie, father Charles, and father and mother-in-law Robert and Helen Larkin.
Along with her mother, she leaves her beloved children, Amy Jane Larkin, and husband Shaun Donnelly of Kittery, Maine, and nephew Andrew McPherson of Barrington, NH. She also leaves her brothers and sisters-in-law – Robert and Lee Larkin, Mary and David Harrington, John and Sue Ellen Larkin, Elizabeth Larkin, Catherine Larkin and Nancy Harhut, Peter and Margaret Mullen, Owen and Marjorie Reedy Larkin, as well as dear nieces and nephews.
She was a graduate of West Springfield High School Class of 1976, The University of Massachusetts, and The University of New England, where was named a Who's Who Among College Students. She also held a post graduate degree in Addiction and Substance Abuse, as well as certification as an Animal Assisted Therapy Trainer. She worked for many years with dogs in psychotherapy with clients, concentrating on trauma victims. Martha was part of the Maine Crisis team, worked for Maine DHS, supervised both Sexual Offender Units and Victim Psychotherapy for Maine DOC, as well as working for a number of schools and hospitals in Maine and Massachusetts. She also taught at several colleges in Maine and was an avid writer and presenter in the field of psychotherapy. She retired from private practice in Kennebunk in 2007, but remained active as a member of South Congregational Church and volunteered with Community Harvest, a local non-profit organization. Martha's greatest joys were spending time with her family and her dogs, fishing, writing and helping others. The funeral service will be Saturday January 5, 2013 at 2 pm at the West Springfield Curran-Jones Funeral Home. A calling hour will precede the service on Saturday from 1:00 to 2:00 pm.
