Obituary

Springfield – Martin W. Stowers, passed away suddenly on Thursday February 24, 2022 at Baystate Medical Center.  Martin (affectionately known as "Tookie") was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, the son of the late Winthrop and Katharine (Connors) Stowers.  He was employed as a clerk in various establishments throughout the years, until his failing health necessitated that he move into a nursing home for care.  Tookie never had children, but he treated his many nieces and nephews as though they were his very own.  He never had much in the way of money or material things, but his nieces and nephews knew that much of what he did have, he shared with them. There were so many fun moments when he would take one (or more) of his "kids" to get an ice cream sundae, or to take a drive through Storrowtown (or anywhere!) to see what was going on, teach some of them to play tennis, and happily took them to many high school football games (he especially loved it when Cathedral was playing Commerce!). Tookie was a good and kind soul, and one who left his mark on so many; he truly made a difference and he will be sadly missed. He leaves his sisters Shirley (McCarthy) Keeler, Beatrice McCarthy and her husband Jerome, brothers Charles Stowers and his wife Jean, Donald Stowers and his wife Shirley, and his Aunt Joan Manser. He was predeceased by his sister Dorothy Cowles and her husband Bruce, and his brothers Richard and Winthrop (Boomer) Stowers. He also leaves many nieces, nephews and cousins to grieve his passing.  A private funeral will be held in St. Thomas Cemetery, West Springfield at the convenience of the family.  The West Springfield Curran-Jones Funeral Home is handling all arrangements.  For more information, please visit curranjones.com .  Memorial contributions may be made to the Springfield Rescue Mission. The family wishes to thank the staff at Redstone-Care One in East Longmeadow for their kind, compassionate and respectful care over the years.
