Obituary

Mary Catherine (DeWitt) Dutton, 73, of Feeding Hills, MA, passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 1, 2024. She was born the second of three children in Columbus, NE on May 30, 1950 to William and Evelyn DeWitt.  Mary attended Columbus High School before studying to become an art teacher at Kearney State College, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Education in 1972.

Mary met the love of her life, Larry Dutton, while they were both students at Kearney State.  It is said that upon first seeing him she told her friend, "I'm going to marry him."  This was indeed the case, and excited to start their new lives together, the two were married on May 27, 1972 at Peace Lutheran Church in Columbus, NE.

After the birth of their daughter Michelle, Larry's work brought the young family to Feeding Hills, MA in 1978. It was here that Mary spent the rest of her life lovingly taking care of her beautiful home and family.  Throughout the 1980's she was an active member of the Agawam Junior Women's Club and St. David's Episcopal Church.

A talented artist with an exceptional eye for design, Mary enjoyed making artwork which she used to decorate her own home and give as gifts to friends and family.  In addition to this, she sold crafts to consignment shops over the years, and a collection of her oil and watercolor paintings were put on display at the Agawam Public Library in 1986.

As her daughter got older, Mary transitioned away from being a stay at home mom, and spent several years working as a substitute teacher in the Agawam Public Schools, especially enjoying her time as a long term sub in the art department at the Agawam Junior High. She later worked as a floral designer for the Ames Department Store in Southwick, MA.  Here she allowed her creativity to flourish as she created countless floral arrangements for sale and display.

In her free time, Mary loved golfing, traveling throughout New England, and watching Red Sox baseball.  She was an avid gardener, transforming her yard into a park-like space that continued to evolve through the years.  Mary also teamed up with her husband to volunteer their time planting gardens around the labyrinth at St. David's Church, where she remained an active member.

Despite her many hobbies, Mary's favorite role in her later years was that of a grandparent.  Mary was overjoyed at the birth of her grandson Theryn in 2005, and returned to her job as nurturing caregiver, watching him several days a week.  A devoted "Grammy", Mary could not have been prouder of her grandson, who was truly the apple of her eye.  As her husband would say, "Theryn, no one has your back like Grammy."

Mary will always be remembered for her sincere love of life. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends, but her memory will live on in the hearts of all those who loved her.  Mary was preceded in death by her father (William DeWitt), mother (Eveyln DeWitt), and older brother (Steven DeWitt).  She is survived by her devoted husband of nearly 52 years (Larry Dutton), daughter (Michelle Pelletier), son in-law (Christopher Pelletier), grandson (Theryn Pelletier), younger brother (Robert DeWitt), and many beloved in-laws, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Visiting Hours for Mary will be held at the AGAWAM CURRAN JONES FUNERAL HOME, 745 Cooper Street on Monday, January 8, 2024 from 4-7pm. A funeral service and "Celebration of Life" will be scheduled for a later time.  In lieu of flowers, donations to St. David's Episcopal Church in Agawam, MA would be greatly appreciated.
