Obituary

Mary J. (Fransoua) Ladas, 86, passed away peacefully after a long illness on June, 5, 2016. She was born August 9, 1929, in Mytilene, Lesvos, Greece to the late John and Calliope (Kandelelis) Fransoua. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, James Ladas in 2011 whom she shared sixty-one years. She was also predeceased by her brothers Gabriel and George Fransoua. Having spent her childhood in Greece during the World War II German occupancy and the Greek Civil War, Mary immigrated to this county in 1950 to marry her husband. Unable to finish her schooling because of the wars, Mary kept her thirst for knowledge alive, learning a new language and always studying the domestic arts throughout her life, becoming a skilled gardener, seamstress and chef. All who knew her were amazed by her many talents and her immense generosity, none who visited her left empty handed. A heart so filled with love that strangers felt welcomed. Mary was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a lifelong faithful Greek Orthodox Christian and a member of the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity in Holyoke, MA. She was also a member of the National Philoptochos Society and the Eastern Star. Mary was a supportive member of the church and helped to keep many traditions alive, singing hymns during services and preparing the traditional memorial trays. She leaves behind to cherish her memory her daughter, Calliope Ladas and her partner Peter Wiley of Sonoma, CA; Julie Kereakoglow and her husband Greg; Doris Ladas and her fiancé Thomas Bass; and George Ladas and his girlfriend Sandy Kaufmann all of South Hadley. Her sisters-in-law Julia Kalogeros and husband Nickolas, Cecile Pyliotis and her husband Dean, and Marianthi Fransoua. She also leaves her grandchildren, her pride and joy, Elizabeth and Vanessa Kereakoglow; Andrew, Stephanie and Cindy Ladas, her great-granddaughter, Leighton Ladas, and her Godchildren, Edward Kalogeros and Anna Christovichotis along with many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. The Ladas family would like to thank the staff of Holyoke Health Care Center and the Holyoke VNA & Hospice for their support during this difficult time. The funeral will be held Friday, June 10, at 9 am from the CURRAN-O'BRIEN FUNERAL HOME, 33 Lamb Street, South Hadley, MA with a service at 10 am at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity, 410 Main Street, Holyoke, MA. The burial will follow in Forestdale Cemetery. Calling hours are Thursday, June 9, from 4-7 pm. Memorial contributions in Mary's name may be made to the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity, 410 Main Street, Holyoke, MA 01040 or the Alzheimer's Association, 480 Pleasant Street, Watertown, MA 02472.
