Marya Martinell, 72, of Westfield, died Friday surrounded by family and friends at Baystate Medical Center. She was born to the late Olivia and Harold L. Robinson Jr at Fort Jackson, Columbia, South Carolina, on March 20, 1944. Marya grew up in West Springfield and lived most of her life there and in Southwick. She attended St. Thomas School, Cathedral High School, and Springfield Technical Institute (now Springfield Technical Community College) , where she earned a certificate as a surgical technician. She married the late Dr. James Mitchell Martinell in 1977. Marya worked as a veterinary technician with her husband at the Southwick Animal Hospital, a practice they established and shared for more than 20 years. Later in life she volunteered for many years as a patient advocate in the emergency room at Baystate Medical Center. Marya loved animals, antiques, history, and genealogy. She had a vibrant personality and was well known for her tremendous generosity. Marya was predeceased by her loving husband Dr. James M. Martinell in 2001; her younger sister Christina J. Daigle in 1995; her older sister, Janina A. Cirillo, in 2013; her younger sister Cynthia J. Clark in October; and her dog Addie in 2013. She is survived by her son Clayton H. Banes of Easthampton and his wife, Carolyn Zaikowski; her son Justin R. Banes of West Springfield, his wife, Sheila, and their beautiful daughter, Olivia; her brother Harold L. Robinson III of West Springfield; and her dear young dog, Maddie. The funeral will be Wednesday at 9:00 am from West Springfield Curran-Jones Funeral Home followed by Mass in St. Mary's Church, Westfield at 10:30 am. Burial in New Cemetery. Calling hours are Tuesday 4:00 to 7:00 pm. Contributions in her memory may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children, 516 Carew Street, Springfield, MA 01104.
